Biology

An amorphous species, Ditto appears as a short pink or purple blob with beady eyes and a small mouth, standing 1 foot (30 cm) tall. It is capable of transforming into an exact copy of anything it sees by altering its genetic code, rearranging its cellular structure into anything at will temporarily.

However, this transformation is often imperfect, resulting in Ditto's eyes or entire face remaining the same on the transformed body, and if it tries to do this from memory it will often get details wrong. The specific imperfections vary from Ditto to Ditto. It does not get along with others of the same species, as they will both fruitlessly try to transform into each other. Unlike other Pokémon, Ditto can not evolve into a stronger form.

Design & origin

Ditto was created by the design team as a tribute to the pop culture yellow smiley face ideogram, and its design was finalized by Ken Sugimori. Originally called Metamon in Japan, it was given the English name "Ditto" due to its mimicking nature.

During the development of Pokémon Gold and Silver, an evolution called Animon was considered; it appeared as a blob with a large mouth with two upper and lower fangs and a spike-like horn protruding from its head.
