Biology

Arceus is said to be the god of Pokémon, serving as the creator deity for the Pokémon universe. It is known as "The Original One", as it is told in mythology that it emerged from an egg "in a place where there was nothing" before the universe even existed, and that it "shaped all there is in this world".

It is said to have created the universe with its "1,000 arms", as well as Dialga, the master of time, Palkia, the master of space, and Giratina, the master of antimatter. It later banished Giratina to the Distortion World for its violent disposition, causing it to be stricken from records as well as Giratina itself developing a strong grudge against its creator.

It is also responsible for the creation of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, which represent knowledge, emotion, and willpower respectively. The myths surrounding Arceus inspired the Aether Foundation's scientists to create Pokémon dubbed "beast killers", the end result being the Legendary Pokémon Type: Null. In the past, it was worshipped as "almighty Sinnoh"; the Diamond and Pearl Clans also worship it, but they mistook Dialga and Palkia respectively for Arceus.

Arceus is a quadrupedal, llama-like Pokémon. Its body is primarily white and grey, with a gold wheel adorned with four green jewels and gold hooves. Its head extends into a flowing mane, and it has a horse-like design and mannerisms.

When exposed to a Plate of a specific type, Arceus changes its type and color to match that Plate.

Design & origin

Arceus was designed by Takao Unno. Its name in both English and Japanese may be derived from the Ancient Greek word "arkhé" (αρχή), meaning "origin" or "beginning". It may also be derived from "alpha", "deus", a Latin word meaning "god", or "archeus", a part of the astral plane in alchemy.

A 2022 leak revealed that during the beta of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, it had a significantly different and simpler design.
