Biology

Umbreon, an evolution of Eevee, is a creature with rings on its body that glow in moonlight.

Design & origin

Umbreon is likely based on a fennec fox, and its design may be associated with Egyptian sculptures of Bastet and Anubis, the god of the moon Khonsu, and the legend of the moon rabbit. Together, Espeon and Umbreon represent either side of yin and yang. Its English name hails from "umbra" and "eon".

Designed by Atsuko Nishida, it was originally a Poison type, changed to Dark as the new type was implemented. Its colors were not decided during development, which assumed monochrome sprites.
