Biology

Known as the Balloon Pokémon, Jigglypuff can inflate its body like a balloon to float around, or flatten it. It is characterized by putting its enemies to sleep by singing a lullaby: its voice's wavelength can match the brain waves of sleeping people and Pokémon, lulling them to sleep.

Before beginning to sing, it mesmerizes the opponent with its soft, glowing eyes and, if it inflates itself, it can sing for longer periods of time. If the foe does not fall asleep, it can risk its life by singing until it runs out of air. It also keeps singing if the foe does fall asleep.

Jigglypuff evolves from Igglybuff when it reaches a certain point of happiness, and evolves into Wigglytuff when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Design & origin

Its Japanese name, Purin, derives from the Japanese loanword for custard or pudding. According to director Junichi Masuda, there were initially concerns that Jigglypuff's cuter design would not take off with western audiences, and considerations to redesign it were made, but ultimately scrapped. When translating the games for western audiences, Nintendo renamed it "Jigglypuff", a combination of the words "jiggly" and "puff", relating to its jelly-like appearance. Its design was finalized by Ken Sugimori.
