Biology

Also known as the "Human Shape" Pokémon, Jynx is a female-only species. It is a purple humanoid with blond hair and a dress, standing 4 feet 7 inches (109 cm) tall, and walks in a dance-like fashion, wiggling its hips in a manner described as "seductive".

It speaks in a language that only other Jynx can understand; though the sound is described as similar to human speech, it has yet to be deciphered, so Jynx usually opts to communicate with dance-like movement instead, the exact rhythm relying on its emotion at the time. The dance affects people, causing them to dance themselves with no regard to their actions.

Jynx is psychic: it can put opponents to sleep by kissing them, and can additionally protect itself with a psychically-generated barrier. Smoochum can evolve into Jynx.

Design & origin

Known in Japan as Rougela, it was renamed "Jynx", a play on the word "jinx", for Western audiences. Jynx resembles the Japanese mythical creature Yuki-onna. Originally portrayed with a black face and dark blue hands, its design was changed to purple coloration after critiques that it perpetuated racism.

A Mega Evolution, Mega Jynx, with a blue dress and extended hair that dragged on the floor, was planned for Pokémon X and Y but did not proceed past the concept art phase.
