Biology
After it hatches, Squirtle's back gradually swells and hardens into a shell. It withdraws into its shell for protection or to sleep, and its grooved, rounded shape reduces its water resistance, allowing it to swim faster. To attack, it sprays foamy water from its mouth. Squirtle can evolve into Wartortle, and can then further evolve into Blastoise.
Design & origin
Squirtle was designed by Atsuko Nishida, who based its design on its final form, a turtle-esque Pokémon called Blastoise. Originally called "Zenigame" in Japanese, its name was changed to Squirtle during the English localization in order to make it "clever and descriptive"; it is a portmanteau of the words "squirt" and "turtle".
