Biology

Bulbasaur are small, amphibian and plant Pokémon that move on all four legs, similar to a dinosaur and frog. They have blue-green bodies with darker blue-green spots and bear a big plant bulb on their backs. The seed on a Bulbasaur's back is planted at birth and then sprouts and grows along with it.

The bulb absorbs sunlight which allows it to grow; since the bulb can photosynthesize and stores nutrients, Bulbasaur can survive for days without eating. As with the rest of its evolutionary line, its bulb has vines the Pokémon uses as tentacles. Bulbasaur can evolve into Ivysaur, which can then evolve into Venusaur.

Design & origin

Created by Atsuko Nishida and finalized by Ken Sugimori, Bulbasaur was designed by "working backwards" from the established Venusaur design. Despite their English names, Sugimori confirmed that the design of Bulbasaur and its evolutions are based on frogs.

Its Japanese name, Fushigidane, is a combination of the Japanese words for mystery or miracle (fushigi) and seed (tane); its English name is a portmanteau relating to its dinosaurian appearance and the large garlic-shaped bulb on its back.
