Biology

Dunsparce is a snake-like Pokémon, though it has also been described as resembling larvae or pupae. Dunsparce is small and yellow, with tiny wings on its back, spikes on its chin, a stinger, and closed eyes. Its wings, oftentimes covered in mud, are not capable of flight.

Instead, they dig holes and burrow in Diglett tunnels. It has an evolution called Dudunsparce.

Design & origin

Designed by Hironobu Yoshida, Dunsparce is likely based on the tsuchinoko, a large snake-like creature in Japanese folklore said to be able to leap great distances; its Japanese name is a rearrangement of tsuchinoko. Due to its wings, it may also be based on the mythological creature amphitere. Its name is a combination of the words "dun" and "sparse".

In the Gold and Silver beta, it had a "more serpentine" design and originally had no wings on its back.
