Biology

Standing 2 feet (61 cm) tall, Mawile is a bipedal creature with a yellow body, with its legs flaring outward and stopping just before its feet. It has three-digit black hands with the coloration extending up to the elbows, while its feet are cloven hooves.

It has large pink eyes, while the hair on its head resembles a bowl cut hairstyle with two tufts of hair extending downward on each side of its brow. A large black horn extends from the back of its head resembling a crocodile maw, with visible white teeth and a yellow spot on the upper middle; this second mouth is made from deformed steel horns.

Mawile is able to open and close the horn revealing a pink interior; in this manner, the horn can act as a secondary mouth to bite objects. The second mouth does not have taste buds, so it uses it to eat things it does not like the taste of. It tricks opponents with its non-threatening appearance, and eats them.

Despite having a feminine appearance, Mawile is a gendered species and subjects of it can either be male or female.

Design & origin

Mawile's design is inspired by the Futakuchi-onna, a woman said to have a second mouth on the back of her head. For Ruby and Sapphire, the development team wanted to push the concept of what a Pokémon could look like; the design was finalized by Ken Sugimori. Production notes clarify that its horn is not a real mouth, lacking a throat, tongue, and spittle.

In July 2026, an unused Diamond and Pearl design speculated to belong to Mawile's evolutionary line was uncovered.

Forms

Mega Mawile

Mega Mawile stands 3 ft 3 in (99 cm) tall and gains an additional horn maw, each protruding from the sides of its head, while its legs and sleeve-like arms gain pink coloring. It has an extremely vicious disposition, gripping prey in its two sets of jaws and tearing them apart; one gnash can turn a boulder to dust.
