Biology

Dragonite is the evolved form of Dragonair, which evolves from Dratini. Standing at 7 feet 3 inches tall, it has light-orange skin and orange wings with teal membranes, a striped belly, a tail, a snout, two antennae, and a horn. Unlike Dratini and Dragonair, which are both blue, serpentine creatures, Dragonite grows arms and legs.

Dragonite is said to have human levels of intelligence. It is capable of flight, said to move fast enough to circle the globe in just sixteen hours, and its build lets it freely fly over raging seas without trouble to rescue drowning people.

It is known for its kindhearted nature and tendency to spend time in marine settings, helping people who are in peril at sea and being capable of manipulating the weather; tales of it leading lost and foundering ships to the safety of land are commonplace. Observing this, a ship's captain dubbed it "the sea incarnate", and figureheads that resemble Dragonite now decorate the bows of many ships.

Dragonite are considered a rarity to encounter, living on a hidden island in the ocean with Dratini and Dragonair, which use their powers to control the weather to obscure the island. Despite its protective nature, it sometimes becomes enraged when disturbed and has a rivalry with Kingdra.

Design & origin

Dragonite was designed by Shigeki Morimoto. It originally had a long fin on its back that was removed beginning in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
