Biology

Gyarados is the evolved form of Magikarp, boasting significant strength and power. Gyarados are large, blue, snake-like Pokémon, well-known for their bad tempers, and they frequently go on violent rampages. When Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, its brain cells undergo a structural transformation, said to be the cause of its violent nature.

Throughout history, it would appear and burn down cities, villages, and towns in rampages lasting around a month. There are some regions where it is called "the deity of destruction". Gyarados cannot actually fly.

Design & origin

Gyarados's design is inspired by dragons, specifically dragons seen in Chinese mythology. Magikarp's evolution into Gyarados is based on the Chinese tale of carp that leap over a legendary waterfall called the Dragon Gate and are transformed into dragons. In the game's beta, Gyarados had a vastly different design, resembling an eyeless, worm-like creature with sharp teeth.

Its beta English name was "Skulkraken", a combination of "skull" or "skulk" and "kraken", but the final release used the original Japanese name.

Its destructive nature has further ascended due to Mega Evolution energy placing a burden on it. Its native instinct is to destroy everything it sees using power-jets of water coming from the red orifices on its sides.

If a ship is caught in the way, it will be cleanly split in half. However, it will listen to a trainer who it shares a deep bond with.
